Eno’s kaleidoscopic installation provided the perfect starting point for this, allowing a full exploration of human responses to, and the historical and chemical provenance of colour. In late 2006, Eno released 77 Million Paintings, a program of generative video and music specifically for the PC. As well as running a number of experiments and workshops over this period, he was also able to indulge his interest in colour and our relationship to it. This weekend, Eno’s vision comes full circle to the Yerba Buena Center with his North American debut of 77 Million Paintings, a video tour de force, art installation and ambient soundscape all rolled into one. Painter and conservator Stig Evans was the artist in residence for the duration of the 77 Million Paintings exhibition.

Installed into the former chancel area of the gallery, 77 Million Paintings was accompanied by a shifting ambient soundscape and was displayed in low light conditions, creating an immersive and meditative experience.

Originally conceived in 2006, the piece was reminiscent of a stained glass window or mosaic design, shifting and changing Eno’s hand drawn images by way of ‘generative’ software that provided an infinite number of possible combinations. At $100/seat this discussion is not for the frugal by any means, but if you’re an Eno nut (as I am) and you have at least one vintage edition of Oblique Strategies sitting around your house collecting dust (and/or being actively used), you’ll probably turn out for a chance at monopolizing the microphone and throwing a question or two to the master, while the rest of the auditorium groans with impatience.
